How to Clean a Chalkboard to Get it Looking New Again
Cleaning chalk off a chalkboard can be a challenge, whether it’s a small one or a whole wall. If you’re looking to get your chalkboard back to black and looking brand new, without streaks or chalk haze, try this simple DIY cleaning solution. We know you love your kids’ artwork, but we also know you want a clean slate for their next masterpiece.
Step 1: Erase the Chalkboard
If you have an eraser, use it. If not, a dry cloth does the trick just as well. The goal here is to get as much loose chalk off the wall as possible. Then, use your vacuum (USA) (Canada) with a horsehair brush (USA) (Canada) to suck up all the loose chalk dust from the wall.

Step 2: Make the Solution
This may come as no shock if you are a follower of @gocleanco: we’re going to be using our tried and true cleaning recipe here. Grab a bucket and mix:
Step 3: Wipe the Wall
Wipe your chalkboard or wall down with a microfiber cloth (USA) (Canada), starting from the top and working your way down. Let it dry completely.
If you’re still seeing a white haze from chalk residue, mix up a fresh batch of cleaning solution, grab a new cloth, and wipe it down again. Be aware that sometimes the haze might reappear after a few minutes; certain types of chalk are more prone to this and may as well be permanent markers!
If the haze persists, switch to a sponge or a soft scrub brush and continue wiping with the cleaning solution until your wall is clean. Patience is necessary, but you’ll eventually get there.
Crayon marks on your chalkboard wall? Use Mr. Clean Summer Citrus (USA) (Canada) to remove the greasy residue. Wipe with a clean damp cloth afterwards, Mr. Clean can leave streaks.
Your chalkboard is now clean and ready for use! Get your kids to help with cleaning up around the house using our fillable kids chore charts.

I used Mr. Clean undiluted, sprayed it on and let it sit for about ten minutes, scrubbed and wiped it off well to rinse. Letting your cleaning products sit is part of the process, they do a lot of the heavy lifting for you. I think many of us get discouraged with cleaning products because we spray and wipe immediately with minimal results…dirt and grease needs time to soften and break down before you can remove it. However, there is always a little bit (or a lot) of elbow grease required, nothing in life is free 🙃

Recipe:
1 gallon of hot water in a bucket
1 teaspoon of powered tide laundry detergent
Microfibre cloth or a ripped up old towel—you need a cloth with texture to get into the grooves of the paint but do not scrub too hard or scrape because you’ll chip the paint.
Wipe the walls down and let it soften the boogers/food/dog slobber, then repeat. The hot water will help soften the crud, the tide will lift the dirt.
No need to rinse.
