Easy Microwave Cleaning
We Have a Hack For That.
Microwaves can get downright disgusting. Especially when nobody in your home (or office, or school, etc) uses the splatter cover and the interior is constantly coated with food. The sights and smells can turn your stomach. If mold or bacteria are present it can even make you sick. Fingerprints and greasy film from cooking on your stove can make the exterior just as unappealing.
Don’t burn yourself out, we have quick and easy hacks for cleaning your microwave oven.
When you buy through our links, we may earn a small commission.
What you’ll need:
- Bowl or mug
- White vinegar
- Oven mitts
- Scrub brushes
- Microfibre cloth
- Dawn® Powerwash or Powdered Tide®
- Mr. Clean® or Cascade® dish tabs
- Weiman® stainless steel polish or Windex®
Full Steam Ahead
- Pour 1 cup of water and 1-2 tbsp of vinegar into a bowl or mug.
- Microwave for 5 minutes and let the steam work its magic.
- Using oven mitts, carefully remove the bowl or mug.
- Take the glass turntable plate to the sink and let it cool down (IMPORTANT: do not rinse while the turntable is still hot, it could shatter). Rinse well then dry. If you still have bits of stuck-on food, use Dawn® Powerwash and scrub.
- Wipe the interior of the microwave thoroughly with a damp microfiber cloth followed by a dry cloth to polish.
- Place the turntable plate back into the microwave.

A Soup-erior Looking Exterior
Clean the exterior with our hot water and powdered Tide® mixture or yellow Mr. Clean® if it’s greasy. Shine it up afterwards with Weiman® Stainless Steel polish or Windex® if it’s plastic.

Don’t Forget the Filter
Range hood microwave filters can and should be cleaned regularly. Carefully remove the filter from underneath your microwave and bring it to the sink. Spray it down liberally with straight Mr. Clean® or Dawn® Powerwash and let it sit for 20 minutes – 2 hours. Scrub it down with a brush and rinse thoroughly. If yours is really greasy and Mr. Clean® didn’t quite cut it, you may want to let it soak in a sink full of hot water with a few dish tabs for at least 30 minutes, or more if needed. Once you’ve given it a good scrub, rinse it well and let it dry before putting it back in place.

Pro Tip: To keep your microwave interior cleaner longer, grab a microwave splatter cover (USA) (Canada). Then all you’re washing is the cover and turntable plate when your meal explodes.

Comment link below and I’ll send you the link for the Zing and the brush attachment. The Bissell Zing is one of my favourite vacuums that comes in under $100 in both Canada and the US. You cannot beat this price for the suction and power this thing packs. It’s light weight enough to carry around, lift up high (or low) to get into hard to reach places, and the filter is washable, the canister is easy to empty. I pair it with the hair brush (you have to order it separately!) for dusting baseboards, bathrooms, shelves, basically everything. This vacuum is for hard floors only: It does not have a beater bar for carpets. Only downfall it has is that the cord is a little short and the stick floor attachment sometimes falls out so you have to ram it in there. For under $100 you can’t have it all but honestly this is as close as it gets for me.

Sneaky surprise clean for my Mom for Mother’s Day! She deserved this so much, she has scrubbed a lot of houses with me over the years. Many of you may not know this but my Mom has tagged along and helped with cleaning and training the team since day one. She knows the entire team inside and out and we all love to call her “Mom”. She taught me how to clean, how to run a business and most importantly, how to stand on my own two feet. Then I took everything she taught me and turned it into ✨ THIS ✨

I used Mr. Clean undiluted, sprayed it on and let it sit for about ten minutes, scrubbed and wiped it off well to rinse. Letting your cleaning products sit is part of the process, they do a lot of the heavy lifting for you. I think many of us get discouraged with cleaning products because we spray and wipe immediately with minimal results…dirt and grease needs time to soften and break down before you can remove it. However, there is always a little bit (or a lot) of elbow grease required, nothing in life is free 🙃
