5 Things You Should Clean Every Year

1. Freezer.
Cleaning the freezer is an annoying task but needs to be done. If you leave this task for too long you will have a freezer full of outdated foods piling up and thick ice you’ll have to pick at so we recommend an annual deep cleaning. This article can help you out.

2. Carpets + Upholstery.
Say goodbye to those stubborn stains and hello to fresh carpets and upholstery. After a year’s time it’s likely they will need a deep cleaning. Weigh the pros and cons of hiring someone, renting a machine, or purchasing one outright (Watch our carpet cleaner review here, or read about it here). If you plan to DIY, be sure to spot treat any stains beforehand. These two articles can help you out with those: Protein stains and Food stains.

3. Pantry.
It’s time for a pantry purge. Pull everything out and check expiry dates or for stale products. Give it a good deep clean and get some organizers to make your life easier. We have it all covered in this article.

4. Behind appliances.
We’re talking about your stove, fridge, and laundry machines. This is a task that is easily forgotten. Out of sight out of mind, am I right? Appliances are big and awkward so it’s a good idea to have a second person to help you with the heavy lifting. Go slowly so you don’t scratch your floor or pull out any hoses or plugs. Once you have access back there, vacuum out any vents and the appliances, floor, walls, cabinets etc. Then give everything a wipe with a teaspoon of powdered Tide® and a gallon of hot water. Once complete, push the appliance back into place.

5. Vacuum floor vents.
Vents in the floor get filled with dirt and collect unsightly dust bunnies in the vent slats. When your HVAC system runs, it can blow that dust and dirt back up into the air. One day a year, go around your home and vacuum each vent with a horsehair brush. Remove the vent cover and vacuum inside the ducting as far as you can reach. You might be surprised how many crumbs are down there. Bring a bucket of hot water with a teaspoon of powdered Tide® around with you. Use a scrub brush and cloth to wipe down any remaining dirt from your vent covers. Not only will your vents look better, they will help your home run more efficiently and keep dust and allergens at bay.

Maintaining a comfortable and healthy living environment is important for your wellbeing. By setting aside some time each year to do these tasks you can enjoy a clean, organized home that you can feel good in and be proud of.

I used Mr. Clean undiluted, sprayed it on and let it sit for about ten minutes, scrubbed and wiped it off well to rinse. Letting your cleaning products sit is part of the process, they do a lot of the heavy lifting for you. I think many of us get discouraged with cleaning products because we spray and wipe immediately with minimal results…dirt and grease needs time to soften and break down before you can remove it. However, there is always a little bit (or a lot) of elbow grease required, nothing in life is free 🙃

Recipe:
1 gallon of hot water in a bucket
1 teaspoon of powered tide laundry detergent
Microfibre cloth or a ripped up old towel—you need a cloth with texture to get into the grooves of the paint but do not scrub too hard or scrape because you’ll chip the paint.
Wipe the walls down and let it soften the boogers/food/dog slobber, then repeat. The hot water will help soften the crud, the tide will lift the dirt.
No need to rinse.
