Organizing School Papers: 5 Simple Steps to Family Organization
Between permission slips, weekly spelling tests, “art” (we’re using that term loosely), and hot lunch calendars, the amount of paper that explodes out of kids’ backpacks is a lot. If your counters are drowning in worksheets and your fridge is straining under a magnetic museum of macaroni crafts, it’s time to clean house. Literally.
Here’s how to tame the back-to-school paper chaos, GoCleanCo style.

Step 1: Set Up a Sorting Station
Designate a family command center near your entryway or kitchen. It doesn’t have to be Pinterest-perfect. Just functional. The sorting station is key to a good paper management system. We like:
- One basket or bin for incoming papers (🇺🇸 USA | 🇨🇦 Canada)
- A clipboard or wall file for urgent stuff (think: field trips, newsletters, forms that need signatures yesterday)
- A recycling bin nearby—because not every drawing of a cat is a keeper, Karen
GoCleanCo Tip: Label your bins so the rest of the house knows what’s what. “Miscellaneous,” “Signature,” “Toss”, “Keep”. Keep it simple. (🇺🇸 USA | 🇨🇦 Canada)
Step 2: Purge Weekly
Once a week (Sunday nights work great), do a fast 5-minute paper purge. Grab the recycling bin, put on some tunes, and be ruthless. Ask:
- Do I need this?
- Does my kid need this?
- Will anyone cry if this goes away?
If not: recycle it, baby.
Step 3: Keep Only the Gold
For art and schoolwork that’s genuinely worth saving (like actual effort, awards, or hilarious spelling mistakes), create a “Keep” system:
- Use a file box or accordion folder per kid (🇺🇸 USA | 🇨🇦 Canada)
- Label by grade, year, or theme
- Set a limit: when it’s full, something’s gotta go
Bonus points for snapping a photo before you toss it. Digital memories take up zero square footage (but you still need a system or it will just get lost in the cloud).

Step 4: Clean the Surface
Once the paper mountain is gone, wipe down your surfaces. You didn’t think we’d forget this part, right?
- Use a damp microfiber cloth and your favorite disinfecting spray
- Scrub those sticky backpack drops, snack crumbs, and mystery pencil marks off your counter or table
- Feels better already, doesn’t it?
Step 5: Set a Habit, Not a Trap
Paper clutter doesn’t stand a chance against a routine. Get in the habit of checking backpacks with your kids every day after school. These backpack organization tips will help you teach responsibility and cut down on “I forgot to give you this” surprises at 7:58 AM.
Optional: Go Digital
Scan or snap photos of the good stuff and upload to a shared family Google Drive or app like Artkive. You’ll save space, keep memories, and your future self will thank you when it’s time to make a graduation slideshow.
TL;DR
- Set up a home base for papers
- Purge weekly: be ruthless
- Keep only the gems
- Wipe down your workspace
- Create a routine that sticks
Want to make it even easier? Grab a few organizing bins (🇺🇸 USA | 🇨🇦 Canada), and a label maker (🇺🇸 USA | 🇨🇦 Canada) and hop to it.
School’s in. Paper clutter is out.

How to remove set in sunscreen stains:
Steps:
1. Lestoil straight onto the stain
2. Rub it in
3. Let it sit overnight
4. Wash in the hottest water the fabric can take
Check it before it goes in the dryer. Not gone? Do it again.
For the record: I think that if the sunscreen hadn’t been washed, dried and set in already, the dawn power wash would have lifted it! So try that first if you have a fresh sunscreen stain — always treat stains immediately and allow the stain remover time to work.
