Summer Survival Prep: Reset the Chaos Before Summer Hits Full Speed
Summer sounds relaxing in theory. In reality? It’s wet towels on the floor, mystery smells coming from backpacks, and kids asking for snacks every six minutes.
Before summer officially kicks into chaos mode, a little summer survival prep goes a long way. Take a couple of days to reset your home, your routines, and your kids’ spaces. A little prep now makes the next few months feel way less overwhelming.
Your Ultimate Summer Cleaning Checklist
(Start Here)
Kick off your summer cleaning checklist with these quick, easy wins to build some momentum:
- Toss broken toys
- Throw out dried-out markers
- Recycle old school papers
- Donate toys nobody uses anymore
Progress creates momentum, even if it feels small.
Empty the Backpacks and Purge the School Supplies
On the last day of school, empty every backpack and lunch kit THAT DAY.
Not next week. Not in August when you discover a liquified banana and a fossilized yogurt tube at the bottom of a lunch bag.
Check:
- Homework folders
- Water bottles
- Pencil cases
- Jacket pockets
- Lunch kits
Then move straight into the school supply purge:
- Toss dried-out markers and broken crayons
- Recycle old papers
- Test glue sticks
- Make a list of what needs replacing for fall
Pack the usable supplies into one bin and store it out of the way for summer. No tripping over abandoned binders until September.
Reset Kids’ Rooms Before Summer Takes Over
Summer means more time at home, which usually means more mess.
Before the chaos peaks, do a quick bedroom reset as part of your early summer cleaning checklist:
- Donate clothes they’ve outgrown
- Organize toys and books
- Clear surfaces
- Create simple systems kids can maintain themselves
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s making cleanup easier later.
Organize Summer Gear Before It Explodes Everywhere
Pool towels, sunscreen, goggles, sandals, sports equipment… It adds up fast.
For ultimate summer survival, create a simple summer drop zone:
- Hooks for towels and swim bags
- A sunscreen/bug spray bin
- One basket per kid
- A spot for outdoor shoes and toys

Create a Summer Routine That Works for Your Family
Kids thrive on structure, even in summer.
You don’t need a strict schedule, but having some expectations helps:
- Tidy rooms
- Outside time
- Reading or quiet time
- Limited device time
- Everyone helping around the house
And honestly, as a working parent, I get it. Sometimes survival is the goal.
Make Summer Chores Easy
Summer is a great time to get kids helping more consistently around the house.
If you want your kids summer routine to stick, keep the chores simple:
- Make beds
- Put laundry away
- Empty the dishwasher
- Pick up toys
- Feed pets
Consistency matters more than perfection.
You can grab our printable chore charts here (they’re customizable):

Make a Summer Bucket List
Every summer starts with big plans and somehow ends in a blur.
Take a few minutes to make a family bucket list:
- Parks to visit
- Day trips
- Splash parks
- Ice cream stops
- Backyard campfires
- Movie nights
Nothing fancy, just intentional.
The Goal Isn’t a Perfect Summer
The goal is creating a home that feels a little less chaotic and a little easier to manage while routines shift.
And if all you accomplish today is throwing out dried-up markers and cleaning out a lunch kit full of crumbs?
That still counts.

How to remove set in sunscreen stains:
Steps:
1. Lestoil straight onto the stain
2. Rub it in
3. Let it sit overnight
4. Wash in the hottest water the fabric can take
Check it before it goes in the dryer. Not gone? Do it again.
For the record: I think that if the sunscreen hadn’t been washed, dried and set in already, the dawn power wash would have lifted it! So try that first if you have a fresh sunscreen stain — always treat stains immediately and allow the stain remover time to work.
