The Ultimate Dorm Cleaning Checklist for College Move-In

Because if you wouldn’t sleep in someone else’s sheets, don’t trust their fridge, either.

Dorm rooms might look clean when you move in… but spoiler alert: they’re not. If you’re lucky, someone ran a mop across the floor. If you’re not? There’s toothpaste in the sink, crumbs in the drawers, and a mystery odor in the closet.

Before you unpack your life (or put your head on that dorm mattress), give the whole place a deep clean. This dorm cleaning checklist will take under an hour and save you from the dust, funk, and germs of semesters past, setting you up for excellent dorm room organization.

1. Dust From the Top Down

Vacuum, then wipe everything: window ledges, light switches, closet rods, fan blades, shelves, headboards, and anything that’s collected dust since the last move-out.

Use a microfiber cloth and a bucket with hot water plus your cleaner of choice: a squirt of dish soap or 1 tsp of powdered Tide®. After wiping, disinfect high-touch surfaces like light switches and door handles with a disinfecting spray or wipes.

✔ Start high and work your way down.
❌ Skip the paper towels for this step. They leave lint behind and won’t hold up to a proper scrub. Save them for toilets or extra-gross jobs.

Pro Tip: A telescoping duster is your new best friend for reaching overhead lights and under bunk beds.

2. Clean the Mattress (Yes, Really)

Before you even think about putting on sheets:

  • Vacuum the top, sides and bottom.
  • Sprinkle it with baking soda and let sit for 10 minutes.
  • Vacuum again, then spray lightly with fabric-safe disinfectant.

✔ Add a waterproof mattress protector (USA | Canada) from day one. Trust me.
❌ Don’t assume “it looks clean” means it is clean. You’re not the first to sleep here.

3. Disinfect the Mini Fridge

Open it. Sniff. Clean it.

  • Remove all shelves and drawers.
  • Vacuum it out.
  • Clean the interior with Clorox® Clean-Up Spray and a damp cloth.
  • Wipe down the door seal, handle, and exterior with the same spray.
  • Let it air out if it smells like a science experiment.

✔ Keep a box of baking soda inside.
❌ Avoid cramming it full right away. It’s easier to clean when empty.

4. Shared Sink or Bathroom Spot

Whether it’s a full ensuite or a single sink, clean it like you mean it. Use your favorite bathroom cleaner to:

  • Wipe the faucet, knobs, and backsplash.
  • Scrub the sink.
  • Clean the counter and any shared surfaces.
  • Use disinfecting spray or wipes on all the high-touch surfaces. Knobs, handles, light switch, toilet seat, etc.
  • Use Windex® to shine up the mirror.
  • If it’s a full bathroom, clean the whole thing – read how here

✔ Use your own cleaning brush or sponge (and label it!)
❌ Body wash is not a surface cleaner. Nice try.

5. Desk, Dresser, and Drawers

Clean every single drawer. Crumbs, dust, and glitter from 2019 are probably still in there.

  • Vacuum out every drawer, as well as the top, sides, behind, and underneath.
  • Wipe the surface of your furniture and around outlet areas.

✔ Add drawer liners to cover grime or water damage.
❌ Avoid unpacking before this step – you’ll just have to move everything twice.

6. Floor It

Vacuum if at all possible. It’s the only way to actually trap dust and dirt. Brooms just stir it around. Beg, borrow, or steal (okay, don’t actually steal) a vacuum and hit under the furniture, behind the door, and in every dusty corner. That’s where the dust bunnies and old hair ties live.

If you’ve got hard floors, mop with 1 gallon of hot water + 1 tsp powdered Tide®. Yes, even if it looks clean.

✔ Ask your RA if there’s a vacuum you can borrow.
❌ Don’t just push the dirt into the hallway. You weren’t raised in a barn.

7. Stock Your Dorm Cleaning Kit

Keep your dorm cleaning supplies close. You’ll need them again.

✔ Store it under your bed or in your closet for quick weekly cleanups.
❌ Avoid starting the year unprepared. That’s how you end up wondering why your bed smells like gym socks.
