Cool Your Jets! Your Jetted Tub Cleaning Hack
You come home from a long day at work. You’re tired, your muscles ache and your brain is screaming to be turned off. Now think just how wonderful a long, hot, massaging soak in your jetted tub would feel. Amazing right?
If you own a jetted tub, or are looking to invest in one, there are some things you need to know when it comes to cleaning and maintenance. They are different from the standard fiberglass or acrylic tubs. They come with more maintenance since they tend to harbor dirt, bacteria and even mold within the jets. Knowing how to clean a jacuzzi tub properly is essential for a hygienic soak… that’s what we’re here for.
Here is your go-to guide for cleaning spa tub jets and keeping your oasis pristine.
*Please refer to the manufacturer’s manual for maintenance on your model.
Jetted Tub Types
There are two types of jetted tubs. Both provide jetted massages, but they operate differently. The simplest explanation is that air tubs release jets of air, while whirlpool tubs shoot out streams of water. Here’s a more detailed breakdown:
- Whirlpool tub: Think stress relief, soothing muscles….there are a few strategically placed pressure jets to target your sore muscles after a day’s work.
- Air tub: It’s like sitting in champagne. Numerous jets shoot millions of air bubbles to create a gentler but relaxing feeling as you soak.
The most noticeable difference when you’re in them is the sensation. But regardless of what kind of tub you own, proper cleaning and maintenance is important.
Let’s talk spa. What can you add to the tub to make it better?
We love bubbles and jetted tubs are wonderful for that. But as a general rule, do not add bubble bath, bath bombs, soaps or anything with oils into the tub. You have the potential for a huge mess if you do this, plus might clog up your jets and mechanisms. (This may also void your warranty.) Only approved products for jetted tubs should be used (check your manual or consult with companies who sell these products). Epsom salts are generally safe, but follow the directions for use so you don’t get hardened salt residue in the jet system.
Let’s get rid of the scum
The jets in these tubs can get scummy build up over time so cleaning them regularly is important. If you see little black bits in your tub, that’s mold and mildew, people. Eewww.
Since whirlpool tubs circulate water, they can get mold and mildew build up quicker than air tubs. Air tubs are essentially self drying and self cleaning as all you need to do is drain it and turn the jets on until it’s air dried. But deep cleaning should still be done once in a while to keep the jets in great shape and keep the tub functioning properly over time.
Our 5 step process for cleaning tubs:
1. Fill the tub with hot hot water. (Do not run whirlpool jets without water in the tub. They are not the same as air tubs. I repeat do NOT run whirlpool jets without water. These jets are intended to be used with water only. Running them dry can ruin the components and lead to premature breakdown.)

2. Throw in 5-6 Cascade® Dishwasher tabs (must be dishwasher tabs – no substitutes. Under no circumstances should you use laundry tabs – hard no).

3. Once the tub is full of hot water, turn on the jets and let it run for 20 minutes. Don’t be surprised if you see a bunch of filth and debris spit out of the jets when you turn them on. That means the jets are being cleaned.

4. Once you’ve turned off the jets, it’s time to drain the tub and scrub. You may be left with some dirt and particles at the bottom of your tub.. yeah that all came from your jets. Ew! The hot water and dish tabs will soften all the remaining dirt to make it easy to lift. If you can, remove the jet knobs / covers and use a scrub brush to remove any scum and then put them back on. Use an old toothbrush to get deep into crevices that are hard to reach.

5. Give the tub a good rinse until there’s not a speck left and let it drain. Finish with cleaning in and around the tub. (For more, see this article)

Knowing your tub is free and clear of any bacteria and residue, you can relax and enjoy your soak. Take a moment to look around and see if the rest of your bathroom needs any attention as well. If you need help to get a sparkling bathroom see this article.

Cleaning expert plus I do some other stuff which is always a wild ride
I have bought this vacuum so many times, it is cheap (and it goes on sale a lot) — it doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles but it works, especially if you are on a budget or if your vacuum isn’t quite picking up anymore. If you want the link, comment LINK and I’ll send it over.
