9 Simple Do’s and Don’ts of Holiday Cleaning

Christmas can be stressful in and of itself. The lists, the gifts, the decorating, the cooking… Throw in hosting and cleaning, and you have a recipe for a potential disaster.

We have a few helpful do’s and don’ts to help you keep your sanity.

Here is the content of the infographic, “9 Do’s and Don’ts of Holiday Cleaning,” presented as a block of text:

  • Don’t: Vacuum pine needles (they will clog and wreck your vacuum).
  • Do: Sweep up pine needles.
  • Don’t: Do it all alone.
  • Do: Your family should pitch in, or call in reinforcements. Hire a cleaner, and buy pre-made snacks and appetizers.
  • Don’t: Try to clean the whole house the day before.
  • Do: Start cleaning a month before the big day, deep cleaning the main rooms so you only have to touch them up.
  • Don’t: Decorate with tinsel or glitter (*unless you really enjoy cleaning them up for months). *Do as I say, not as I do!*
  • Do: Choose decorations that don’t shed.
  • Don’t: Try to clean everything at once. You will get distracted and bounce around and end up feeling like nothing is done.
  • Do: Work one room and one area at a time.
  • Don’t: Skip cleaning your kitchen appliances, (hopefully) you will have extra hands in the kitchen helping out (and maybe judging).
  • Do: Clean your appliances about a week in advance.
  • Don’t: Let the recycling and garbage pile up for too long after gift opening.
  • Do: Have a designated trash/recycling area and have everyone pitch in.
  • Don’t: Focus on rooms that nobody will see.
  • Do: Put your cleaning efforts into the kitchen and bathroom.
  • Don’t: Stress too much about the cleanliness of your house. I promise it’s not what people will remember.
  • Do: Enjoy the Holidays with your family and friends.
